Her Aunt Patience (Marie Ney) and her Uncle Joss (Leslie Banks) run the "Jamaica Inn" there. Upon Mary's arrival she gets her first inkling that things at the Jamaica Inn might not be quite copacetic when the stagecoach she comes in on rushes past the Inn. The driver mutters something about it being dangerous and drops Mary off down the road a piece, at the mansion home of Sir Humphrey Pengallen who escorts Mary to the Inn himself. Mary soon becomes aware that her Uncle is the leader of a pack of robbers who entice ships to come near the rocky shore to crash. Once the crew is murdered, the group of burglars purloin all the loot and cargo for themselves. One of the group is not a robber at all, but is working undercover to stop the crimes. Mary saves him from being hanged by cutting him down, and they escape together and go seek the help of Sir Humphrey. |
