| Drop Dead Gorgeous is a “mockumentary” telling the tale of the annual Mount Rose beauty pageant in small-town America. This year, former winner Gladys Leeman (Kirstie Alley) is entering her daughter Becky (Denise Richards) for the first time. Becky's main rival is the good-natured and friendly Amber Atkins (Kirsten Dunst). Amber has none of the trappings of life that Becky has grown up with. Living in a trailer park with her alcoholic mother Annette (Ellen Barkin), she adds to the family's meagre budget by working part-time in a funeral home, doing the make-up for the recently departed. Compared to most of the other contestants, it seems rich daddy’s girl Becky is bound to win, but just to make sure, Gladys takes matters into her own hands and devises ways to remove the other contestants from the competition. As the head organizer of the pageant, she also uses everything in her power to sway the vote towards Becky. It’s not until the final live show, however, where it seems like she’s managed to get rid of Amber once and for all. |
