Frank Galvin (Paul Newman) is a lawyer who is having a very rough time, he is broken down and his life is going no where. He isn't getting any jobs and all he seems to do anymore is drink and follow ambulances everywhere to try and get a job. His friend then helps connect him to a job that has something to do with an injury. The two sides decide to settle the dispute without court, but for some reason Frank thinks it would be better to go to court. His idea of going to court was to pick up a win and maybe help his reputation as a lawyer. So they take it to court and the best comes next...
